چکیده

Current online communication systems have neglected an important property of natural conversations; that is, many conversations are opportunistic and arise from awareness of a shared context. As a result, users of current online chat systems, for example, have to explicitly log in to predefined chat rooms with a strong goal in mind. Chatting is construed as a separate activity, and as such is supported by separate tools. Contrary to this, we believe effective communication tools should be embedded in software that supports everyday activities. Our system, I2I, helps people establish live chat while they are manipulating similar documents (e.g., they are reading the same or similar Web pages in their browser, or they are manipulating similar texts in their word processor) by embedding chat facilities in other applications. I2I makes the shared context of distributed users visible by grouping them together in a single conceptual space, thus providing them an opportunity to communicate within the context of the activities they were performing in the original application.

Grid-enabling complex system applications with QosCosGrid: An architectural perspective

Grids are becoming mission-critical components in research and industry, offering sophisticated solutions in leveraging largescale computing and storage resources. Grid resources are usually shared among multiple organizations in an opportunistic manner. However, an opportunistic or “best effort” quality-of-service scheme may be inadequate in situations where a large number of resources need to...

Designer Support for Online Collaboration and Knowledge Construction

Designer support is critical for facilitating collaboration and knowledge construction in an online learning environment. Designer support in this paper refers to the mechanisms that a designer builds in a technology-mediated environment to facilitate online learning. This paper focuses on two aspects of designer support: 1) creating a shared context, and 2) facilitating online communication an...

Leveraging Recurrent Neural Networks for Multimodal Recognition of Social Norm Violation in Dialog

Social norms are shared rules that govern and facilitate social interaction. Violating such social norms via teasing and insults may serve to upend power imbalances or, on the contrary reinforce solidarity and rapport in conversation, rapport which is highly situated and context-dependent. In this work, we investigate the task of automatically identifying the phenomena of social norm violation ...

Rethinking Network Mobility in Pervasive Markets: Model and Trust

With recent advances of wireless ad hoc networking, especially opportunistic forwarding and cognitive radio, there is an increasing concern that existing mobility models are insufficient to represent network mobility in real world settings. In this paper, we discuss our proposal for a more realistic mobility model which captures key features of human movements in pervasive markets. Our findings...
